The Jet on the Sony PMW-F3
By The Jet
We live in an age where professional grade camera and consumer camcorders are collapsing into one frame more and more everyday -- which only makes a low-budget filmmaker like myself happier. Yeah, sure, amazing cameras have been released and almost anybody who's even curious about filmmaking can have easier access to high caliber quality images. If you own one, does that make you a filmmaker? No. What does? It's what you do with the camera and what story you're telling and how good you tell it. Above all else, you must RESPECT and LOVE what it is you've set upon -- which is filmmaking.
I'm no big shot or even a successful filmmaker -- yet -- but I am one at heart and I wanted to share with you a camera that's been on my mind lately and that is the Sony PMW-F3. Man, is she beautiful.
The F3 is listed at $16,000 and it is an upgrade from the wonderful Sony EX3 and has a full 35mm CMOS sensor, amazing depth of field, interchangeable lens mounts and it comes with a PL mount -- which is awesome. PL mounts are used to attach more cinematic glass, like a Zeiss or Cooke or Arri; that is if you wanna use what the pros use. Those lens are expensive as hell.
Have I held one in my hands...? No. I've only had videos online to watch and be fascinated by. Plus, I've been reading about it from people who do own it. It's priced much lower than a Red One. It looks better than any DSLR image and doesn't have the DSLR bugs. I can't afford it, though. I can only write about it and spread the word that the F3 does seem like an amazing and solid camera. I mean, it's Sony. They're behind cameras like the F23 and F35, which are like the Ferrari of hi-def filmmaking.
Although, Sony recently released the FS100 which is more affordable (I might save for that instead) and it has some of the features the F3 has and the same 35mm sensor. But it looks like a box. The ergonomics is not as well thought-out as the F3... and not as beautiful as the F3... anyway, you can also look into the Panasonic AF-100, too, but it doesn't have a 35mm image sensor -- if that's a big deal to you. To me? It sorta is. It has a 4/3 image sensor and it's significantly cheaper than the F3 and FS100 -- and it still produces very cinematic images.
Point is, high caliber cameras are more and more available these days -- if you wanna make movies, you don't necessarily need a studio backing you up. And in my personal opinion, if you have the dough and you wanna make serious films, get the PMW-F3. It's basically the F23's little brother. Happy filmmaking. Also, do give me a "Vote Up" if you found this hub useful or cool. Thanks much. The Jet signing out.
